Longtime friend of Parks & Recreation Kitty Carlisle Hart also graced the evening with wit and savoir- faire as she recounted anecdotes about working with the Marx Brothers in A Night At the Opera, in which she co-starred as a 20-year-old ingenue. Commissioner Benepe said, "And it was from this dynamic and colorful neighborhood that the brothers began their careers as singers and entertainers."Īccepting routed signs emblazoned with the new playground name were two different generations of the Marx family: Maxine Marx (Chico Marx’s 86-year-old daughter) and Jessica Marx (Groucho’s 22-year-old great-granddaughter). Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe announced that Playground 96 in Manhattan would henceforth be known as Marx Brothers Playground, with the goal of "transforming the current half-acre play area into a kinetic and zany representation of Marxian humor and culture." With a nod to Marxian characters, Commissioner Benepe challenged the throng to bring to such a project "the ingenuity of a Driftwood, the creative energy of a Ravelli, and the street-smarts of a Chicolini." Serious Parks & Recreation business also occurred during the course of the evening. Also on the double bill was another classic, A Night At the Opera (1935). More than 100 Parkies, New Yorkers, and Marxians celebrated the 70 th anniversary of the release of 1933’s classic motion picture Duck Soup. The Arsenal Gallery was the scene of a zany gathering last Friday, November 21, when "A Night at The Arsenal," the first Parks & Recreation Marx Brothers Double Feature Film Festival, got underway with all the pomp and ceremony of a Freedonian holiday.
